Cricket Papua New Guinea, Wed Jun 7, 2017 3:41PM

The Piranas scraped home against the Diamonds, while the Diggers are in a commanding position on Stumps on Day 1 in the HEBOU Shield Men’s 3-Day Division at Amini Park, Boroko today.

In the Women’s 40 Over Division, the Piranas batted first and were bowled out for 104 in less than 28 overs against the Diamonds at Amini Park #2 Ground (Bisini). Tanya Ruma 23 (22), Helen Buruka 23 (45) and Veru Kila Frank 20 (27) all made starts for the Piranas but did not go on, while Isabel Kari (3/17) and Kaia Arua (2/35) were the pick of the Diamonds’ bowlers taking three (3) and two (2) wickets respectively. In reply, the Diamonds got off to a disastrous start, falling to 4/15 in four (4) overs. Then Isabel Kari played a magnificent unbeaten innings of 45 off just 64 to get the Diamonds back in the match, but her efforts fell short of a victory for the Diamonds who were bowled out for 98 runs in 24.3 overs. Vicky Ara’a was the start with the ball for the Piranas taking 4/32 off her allotted eight (8) overs.

Meanwhile in the Men’s 3-Day Division on Amini Park, the Hammers got off to a perfect start with Vani Vagi Morea (35) and Jason Kila (23) putting on 60 runs for the opening wicket, before the Diggers’ bowlers took three (3) wickets for no runs. When Vagi Guba (5), Mahuru Dai (4) and Hammers’ captain, Jack Vare-Kevere (10) fell soon after, the Hammers slumped to 6/79. Doura Gavera (35) and John Boge Reva (41) then steadied the innings, putting on 76 runs for the eighth (8th) wicket to resurrect the Hammers’ innings, but when then both fell, the Hammers were bowled out for just 162 in 76.4 overs. Norman Vanua (2/43) and Pipi Raho (2/23) were the only multiple wicket takers for the Diggers. In reply, Tony Ura (41*) and Dogodo Bau (13*) negated the tricky one (1) hour final session to guide the Diggers to 0/59 at Stumps on Day 1, trailing by only 103 runs on the 1st innings with ten (10) wickets in hand.

Day 2 of the Men’s 3-Day fixture will resume tomorrow at Amini Park at 10am, while the Diamonds will take on Sharks on Thursday 8th June at Amini Park #2 (Bisini).
