The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas defeated Samoa in their final round match by six (6) wickets yesterday to not only win the ICC Women’s World T20 EAP Qualifier, but also progress to the Global Qualifier which will be held in late 2017 or early 2018.

Going into the final round match, both the City Pharmacy Lewas and the undefeated Samoa required a victory to be crowned champions of the ICC Women’s WT20 EAP Qualifier and secure a berth in the Global Qualifier. City Pharmacy PNG Lewas’ captain, Pauke Siaka won the toss and sent Samoa into bat on another beautiful day in Sano Japan. Siaka’s decision seemed to be the correct one, when Samoa was reduced to 2/1 after three overs thanks to some brilliant bowling from Ravini Oa and Sibona Jimmy. Samoa’s captain, Regina Lili’i (32) and Lelia Bourne (19) then steadied the innings for the Samoa, putting on 42 runs for the third wicket before Samoa lost three (3) wickets for no runs, and were eventually restricted to a below par 9/79 off their allotted 20 overs. Oa (2/9) and Frank (2/22) picked up a couple of wickets each for the Lewas, while Sibona Jimmy (1/10) and Siaka (1/4) were able to contain the Samoan batswomen at various stages of their innings.

In reply, the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas got off to a perfect start, with Jimmy (22) and Tanya Ruma (5) racing to 38 runs in just 6.3 overs. Then the match turned on its head when Samoa picked up four (4) Lewas wickets for just seven (7) runs to leave the Lewas in a vulnerable position at 4/45. Brenda Tau (20*) then joined Siaka (19*) to put on an unbeaten 37 runs for the fifth wicket to guide the Lewas to six (6) wicket victory inside 19 overs.

Siaka was proud of her team’s effort saying that “our bowlers, they did a really good job and we got early wickets.”

“We are very happy to have made it to the next stage of qualification. And I know the girls are very excited,” concluded Siaka.

The win by the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas meant that Samoa and the Lewas were equal on ten (10) points after six (6) rounds of the competition, but a superior net-run-rate by the Lewas meant that they finished ahead of Samoa and secured the one qualifying spot available.

This meant that the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas advanced to the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier which will be held in late 2017 or early 2018.
