City Pharmacy PNG Lewas bounce back against Japan at ICC Women’s World T20 EAP Qualifier

The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas bounced back with a comfortable 78 run victory over Japan thanks to a brilliant knock from Tanya Ruma in the third round of the ICC Women’s World T20 East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier in Sano, Japan on Sunday 30th April, 2017.

After the loss to Samoa the day before, the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas were sent in by the hosts, Japan in another crucial match in the tournament. At the end of the allotted 20 overs, the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas posted their highest score of the tournament so far with 3/138. Tanya Ruma was the star with the bat for the Lewas, smashing 69 runs off just 61 balls, including five (5) boundaries, two (2) massive sixes and batting until the 19th over of the innings. Sibona Jimmy (27) also made a valuable contribution with the bat, combining with Ruma for a 77-run opening partnership.

In reply, Japan was unable to get on top of the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas bowlers, eventually being restricted to 7/60 off their allotted 20 overs. Right-arm off spinner, Vicky Araa was the star with the ball for the Lewas, taking career best 3/9 off her four (4) overs.  Araa was ably supported by Kaia Arua (2/11), Ravini Oa (1/10) and Jimmy (1/13) who also took wickets and restricted the scoring rate.  

Tanya Ruma was awarded the Player of the Match Award and was delighted with her batting performance and the result.  She dedicated the performance to her family saying that “I was really happy to make 60. I made it for my first bay.”

In the other Round 3 match which was postponed to yesterday, 1st May, 2017 the Samoa defeated Vanuatu by 53 runs to remain undefeated in the tournament.

The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas will play Vanuatu today in their Round 4 fixture while Samoa will take on hosts, Japan. Currently Samoa are leading the points table on six (6) points while the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas are in second position on four (4) points.        

 

The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas is one (1) of the four (4) teams taking part in the ICC Women’s World T20 East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier in Japan from the 28th April to the 5th May, 2017. The other teams being: Samoa (2015 Pacific Games Gold Medallist), Vanuatu and hosts, Japan. 

 

The tournament will be in a double round robin format, with each team competing once per day. The top team will qualify for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier to be held in late 2017 or early 2018.
