The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas fell eighteen (18) runs short against Samoa in the second round of the ICC Women’s World T20 East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier in Sano, Japan on Saturday 29th April, 2017.

After winning the toss, City Pharmacy PNG Lewas’ captain, Pauke Siaka sent Samoa into bat in a very crucial match in the tournament. The decision seemed to be the correct one when in-form City Pharmacy PNG Lewas’ off-spinner, Sibona Jimmy trapped VM Andrew leg-before-wicket (LBW) in the third over. Then the Samoan batswomen steadied     and thanks to their captain Regina Lili’l (36) and Lelia Bourne (29) took the total to 5/99 in their allotted 20 overs. Siaka (2/20) was the only multiple wicket taker for the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas, while Jimmy was the most economical, taking 1/8 off only three overs.

In reply, the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas got off to a steady start, being 1/30 after six overs. Then Maria Tato (4/18) picked up the crucial wickets of Siaka (11) and big hitting Konio Oala (0) in consecutive balls to leave the Lewas in trouble at 3/30. A steady fall of wickets followed and unfortunately for the Lewas, they were unable to recover to be eventually bowled out for a disappointing 83 in 18.2 overs.

In the other match on Saturday, Vanuatu defeated Japan for the first time in their history thanks to a strong bowling performance from young spinner Nasimana Novaika (4/15).

The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas turn their attention to Japan in the next round, while undefeated Samoa takes on Vanuatu.
