Assad Vala disappointed after ODI Series loss to UAE

Cricket Papua New Guinea, Thu Apr 6, 2017 8:03AM

HEBOU PNG Barramundis’ Captain, Assad Vala spoke to Cricket PNG (CPNG) after their defeat in the third One Day International (ODI) to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday by 103 runs in Abu Dhabi.

CPNG: You must be disappointed to lose the ODI Series to UAE 2-1?

Vala:     I’m disappointed with the series loss and of course the boys are as well. Both teams had their moments and we did not take our opportunities. They played well in the crunch moments.

CPNG:  What areas do you think the HEBOU PNG Barramundis were outplayed in?

Vala:     As I said before, they played well in big moments and we did not. There wasn’t any difference in skill levels between both teams but they just played better than us in those big moments.

CPNG:  You must have been proud at the way the boys fought back in the second ODI and in the field in the third ODI?

Vala:     Definitely. Our bowling and fielding has bough us back in to the games apart from the first match but we still need to be consistent and keep improving. Our batting has been disappointing with Tony (Ura) and Vani (Vagi Morea) giving us good starts but the middle order hasn’t been to the standard we know we can play.

CPNG:  What are some of the positives to take out of the ODI series?

Vala:     There were a lot of positives from the ODI Series. The bowling and fielding has been really good but there are still a lot of room for improvements. The batsmen were able to get good starts but have not been able to capitalise on those starts.

The HEBOU PNG Barramundis have a couple of days off, before taking on UAE in their Round 5 Inter-Continental Cup (ICUP) match starting tomorrow, Friday 7th April. The HEBOU PNG Barramundis are currently in fourth (4th) place on 40 points, while UAE are in eighth (8th) position on 7 points in the ICUP Standings.
