UAE too strong for HEBOU PNG Barramundis in 3rd ODI

Cricket Papua New Guinea, Wed Apr 5, 2017 7:51AM

United Arab Emirates (UAE) defeated the HEBOU PNG Barramundis in the third and final One Day International (ODI) by 103 runs to win the series 2-1 over night in Abu Dhabi.

Hosts, UAE won the toss and elected to bat on another warm day in Abu Dhabi. Their decision to bat first seemed to be the correct one with the UAE openers Rohan Mustafa and Mohammed Qasim (33) putting on 101 runs for the opening wicket inside 22 overs, before Sese Bau had Qasim caught off his bowling. Soon after, Bau took the wicket of Shaim Anwar (11) to leave the hosts at 2/117. Rameez Shahzad (37) then joined his captain Mustafa to put on 69 runs for the third wicket before HEBOUPNG Barramundis’ all-rounder, Mahuru Dai bowled Shahzad out for a well compiled 37 runs off just 41 balls. Mustafa continued on and eventually reached his maiden ODI century. Mustafa’s 109 runs came off just 125 balls, including seven boundaries and a six before he was eventually run out by John Boge Reva. After Mustafa’s dismissal, the HEBOU PNG Barramundis were able to halt the progression of the UAE innings, to eventually restrict the hosts to 9/251 off their allotted 50 overs. HEBOU PNG Barramundis’ Captain, Assad Vala once again lead from the front to take 3/30 off his 10 overs, while Bau (2/35) and Reva (2/52) picked up a couple of wickets each.

In reply, the HEBOU PNG Barramundis got off to a flying start with Tony Ura (40) and Vani Vagi Morea (36) putting on 76 runs inside 15 overs for the opening wicket before Ura was caught behind off Ahmed Raza. Ura’s wicket started a top order collapse where the visitors lost five wickets for only 16 runs to be 5/92 in 21.3 overs. Unfortunately the HEBOU PNG Barramundis were unable to recover, and were eventually bowled out for a disappointing 148 runs in just 35.2 overs. Dai was the only other contributor with the bat for HEBOU PNG Barramundis making 28 runs, while Mustafa took 5/25 with the ball backing up from making a century earlier in the day. Mustafa became only the third player in ODI history after Sir Vivian Richards and Paul Collingwood to make a century and take 5 wickets with the ball in the same match.

The HEBOU PNG Barramundis have a couple of days off, before taking on UAE in their Round 5 Inter-Continental Cup (ICUP) match starting on Friday 7th April. The HEBOU PNG Barramundis are currently in fourth (4th) place on 40 points, while UAE are in eighth (8th) position on 7 points in the ICUP Standings.
