Dipak Patel satisfied after ODI victory

Cricket Papua New Guinea, Tue Apr 4, 2017 7:12AM

HEBOU PNG Barramundis’ Head Coach, Dipak Patel opened up to Cricket PNG (CPNG) after their hard fought 26 run victory against hosts, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the second One Day International (ODI)/ICC World Cricket League Championships (WCLC) Round 5 fixture on Sunday in Abu Dhabi.

CPNG:  It must be very satisfying to see the boys fight the way they did in the second ODI/WCLC match against UAE.

Patel:    It was a very good win, to bounce back after the loss in the last game. The most pleasing was we improved in all aspects of our game. We played with passion and commitment.

CPNG:  Did you think 232 was enough? There were plenty of starts with Vani (Vagi Morea) and Dogodo (Bau) the only ones to get big scores.

Patel:    We felt 232 wasn’t enough, but as long as we bowled and fielded to our potential, we could put them (UAE) under pressure. Vani and Dogodo’s contributions were very handy, but most of our batsmen were disappointing, throwing away good starts. We should have scored 260-270.

CPNG:  UAE got off to a great start. At one point they were 1/91. Were you still confident at that stage? What changed?

Patel:    Not sure we were confident, but we believed we could turn it around. They were going along comfortably, then we got a lucky break with a run-out and we capitalised on this crucial moment. We bowled very accurately and our fielding went up to a very high level. Our captain (Assad Vala) lead from the front and his decision making was of a very high level. Our bowlers showed a lot of composer and we controlled the game in the last 10 overs. It was very satisfying performance and we need to regroup quickly before the next game.

The HEBOU PNG Barramundis will take on UAE in their final ODI today. Following this encounter, both teams will play each other in an Inter-Continental Cup (ICUP) and three (3) Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

After the two (2) ICC WCLC/ODI matches, the HEBOU PNG Barramundis remain in second (2nd) place on 14 pints, while UAE are in seventh (7th) place on 4 points. In the ICUP standings the HEBOU PNG Barramundis are in fourth (4th) place on 40 points, while UAE are in eighth (8th) position on 7 points.
