Cricket PNG secure New Zealand Cricket Legend Ross Taylor

Cricket PNG (CPNG) announced last Friday that current New Zealand Test Cricketing Legend, Ross Taylor will join the HEBOU PNG Barramundis as a consultant coach on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Tour.

 

Greg Campbell, CPNG Chief Executive Officer (CEO) made the announcement and was very excited to have the current New Zealand Test Player in the coaching group, headed by former New Zealand Test Cricketer and current HEBOU PNG Barramundis Head Coach, Dipak Patel. 

 

“Champion New Zealand batsmen, Ross Taylor will be joining the HEBOU PNG Barramundis has a consultant coach in the UAE for about a week,” said Campbell.

 

“This has been a joint project between the ICC EAP, New Zealand Cricket and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and we would like to thank all parties for their support in making this possible. We are very privileged to get the Ross on board and I am sure that the coaching staff and players who are currently in the UAE are looking forward to working with Ross,” said Campbell.

 

Ross Taylor is a former New Zealand Test, One Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) International Captain, who still plays for the New Zealand national cricket team, the Black Caps. Taylor will join the HEBOU PNG Barramundis as a consultant coach in the UAE after the current Test Series against South Africa in New Zealand, which Taylor suffered a low grade calf tear in the 1st Test of the series.

 

Taylor, who is part Samoan has played 81 Test Matches, averaging 47.10 with the bat with an highest score of 290 against Australia in the 2015/16 Season in Australia. This score was Taylor’s highest score and became the highest score by a New Zealand batsman in an away Test Match.

 

Taylor has also played 183 ODIs for New Zealand with a healthy batting average of 43.57, which included a highest score of 131* against Pakistan in the 2011 ICC World Cup in the sub-continent. He currently holds the record for the most number of ODI centuries for New Zealand (17) after scoring his seventh century against South Africa this year as well as becoming the fasted New Zealand cricketer to 6,000 ODI runs.

 

Taylor has also played 73 T20Is for New Zealand, averaging 24.15 with the bat, with a healthy strike-rate of 120.07, scoring five (5) half centuries.     

 

The International Cricket Council (ICC) East Asia Pacific (EAP) Development Manager, Kieran McMillan was also excited at this announcement.   

 

“The ICC is excited to facilitate a connection between PNG and one of the world’s best batsmen, Ross Taylor.  We hope that his involvement in the current PNG tour of the UAE is the start of a long-term mentoring relationship between Ross and the PNG team.  Ross has a tonne of experience at the highest levels of cricket which will be invaluable to PNG as it aims to continue its rise through the world rankings,” said McMillan.

 

The HEBOU PNG Barramundis flew into Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday 18th March, where they will play three (3) warm-up matches against English County Teams, before taking on hosts, UAE in three (3) One Day Internationals, an Inter-Continental Cup (ICUP) and three (3) Twenty20 Internationals. The first two (2) out of the three (3) ODIs will be ICC World Cricket League Championship matches.

 

Currently the HEBOU PNG Barramundis are in fourth (4th) place on 40 points on the ICC ICUP Standings, while UAE are in eighth (8th) position on 7 points. In the WCLC Standings, the HEBOU PNG Barramundis are in second (2nd) position on 12 points and UAE are in eighth (8th) position on only 2 points.
