Dipak Patel opens up before HEBOU PNG Barramundis UAE Tour

Cricket Papua New Guinea, Fri Mar 17, 2017 1:00PM

The HEBOU PNG Barramundis’ head coach, Dipak Patel opened up to Cricket PNG (CPNG) before the squad departed to United Arab Emirates (UAE) this morning

Question: How are the boys travelling after the Tour to Sydney and Canberra?

The Barra's squad has been busy with their S&C (Strength and Conditioning) and skills trainings sessions five days a week. Their fitness is at a high level; however the wet weather interfered a lot on our skills preparation.

Question: There are a couple of changes to the squad. It must be good to get the experience of Jack Vare Kevere and the bowling of Norman Vanua back in the mix.

Yes, we are pleased and we welcome them back. They both bring so much experience and leadership to the squad. Jack has worked really hard to come back a good month ahead of his rehab.

Norman also has had a frustrating injury and it's been slow in responding to his rehab, however he has trained full on for the last three weeks and we are confident his work loads are close where we'd want him for the tour.

We will give them every opportunity to get back to match fitness in the early part of the tour.

Question: For the first time, the HEBOU PNG Barramundis will be playing a couple of English County Teams. This will be a challenge and a great experience for them.

Although we did play a number Counties in warm up games 18 months ago, these games will be close to their full strength squads. We can use this challenge to play against seasoned professional to prepare for the UAE series. The squad is very excited in playing these fixtures.

Question: Currently the HEBOU PNG Barramundis are second on the WCLC Ladder and fourth on the ICUP Ladders. These matches will be crucial in the overall standing at the end of the year.

We are well aware in the standing in both formats, but we're very focused in taking one game at a time.

The last thing we'd want is thinking about positions on the ladders. If we play to our potential then results will look after themselves.

Question: The UAE Squad will be a tough opposition despite their ranking in both the ICUP and WCLC Ladder

Playing the UAE on their own patch is always a huge challenge and we won't be taking them lightly, but at the same time we don't want give them too much respect either.

The HEBOU PNG Barramundis will fly into Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday 18th March, where they will play three (3) warm-up matches against English County Teams, before taking on hosts, UAE in three (3) One Day Internationals, an Inter-Continental Cup (ICUP) and three (3) Twenty20 Internationals. The first two (2) out of the three (3) ODIs will be ICC World Cricket League Championship matches.

Currently the HEBOU PNG Barramundis are in fourth (4th) place on 40 points on the ICC ICUP Standings, while UAE are in eighth (8th) position on 7 points. In the WCLC Standings, the HEBOU PNG Barramundis are in second (2nd) position on 12 points and UAE are in eighth (8th) position on only 2 points.
