The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas lost their opening pool match in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier against Bangladesh by 118 runs at the Colombo Cricket Club yesterday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bangladesh got off to a disastrous start with City Pharmacy PNG Lewas opening bowler Mairi Tom (2/35) dismissing Bangladesh opening batswomen, Sharmin Sultana for no score to leave the Asian cricketing nation at 1/1 in the second over. Then the Bangladesh middle order settled to everytually post a respectable 6/215 off their allotted 50 overs thanks to half centuries from Harmin Akhter (56) and Fargana Hoque (51). Ravini Oa was the standout bowler for the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas taking 2/23 off 10 overs, which included three (3) maidens, while Sibonna Jimmy (2/32) and Tom (2/35) also took two (2) wickets apiece.
In reply, the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas lost both their opening batswomen, Norma Ovasuru (0) and Brenda Tau (1) inside three (3) overs to leave the Pacific nation in deep trouble at 2/2. Lewas’ captain, Pauke Siaka (32) and Tanya Ruma (20) then steadied the innings to put on a 50 run third-wicket partnership before Siaka was dismissed by Rumana Ahmed. Siaka’s dismissal started the middle order collapse for the City Pharmacy PNG who were eventually bowled out for 97 in 32.1 overs, despite 29 runs from Konio Oala. For Bangladesh, four (4) bowlers took two (2) wickets apiece- Rumana Ahmed (2/13), Salma Khatun (2/14), Panna Ghosh (2/20) and Jahanara (2/27).
In other results, India defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 114 runs at P. Sara Stadium, South Africa defeated Pakistan by 63 runs at Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) and Ireland defeated Zimbabwe by 119 runs at Mercantile Cricket Association (MCA) Ground.
The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas have a couple of days off before taking on another Asian Cricketing Powerhouse in Pakistan on Friday 10th February at NCC in their second pool match of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier.
The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas will be one (1) of the ten (10) teams taking part in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier from the 7-21st February, 2017 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The tournament will see the bottom four sides from the ICC Women’s Championship along with Bangladesh, Ireland, Thailand, Scotland, Zimbabwe and the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas go head to head for the four (4) remaining spots in the ICC Women’s World Cup in the United Kingdom from the 26th June to the 23rd February, 2017.
The ten (10) sides competing in Colombo will be divided into two groups of five with the top three from each progressing to the Super Six stage, thus securing One-Day International (ODI) status until the next ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier. The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas are in Group B along with South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Scotland.
The top four sides from the Super Six stage will qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 as well as for the next ICC Women’s Championship, while the top two sides will contest the final on 21 February.
The City Pharmacy PNG Lewas take on Bangladesh at the CCC Ground in Colombo today in their 1st Pool Match of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier.
The last time the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas took on Bangladesh was at the 2015 ICC Women’s T20 Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand, where they lost by 41 runs to the strong Asian Cricket Nation.
